Red Dead Online is the best five bucks I've ever spent

With a week off between Christmas and New Years, a pandemic raging outside, and cold, rainy weather keeping the family in the house, I was hoping to find a game to sink into to help ease my soul and pass the time. After trying a few different titles (Monster Hunter World, Days Gone), it turns out that the game I needed was Red Dead Online - though I'm probably not playing it the way that most folks do.

My time with Red Dead Online has been spent primarily engaging in the Trader role. Sure, I've spent a few hours running around the Wild West, bandit-ing out and rampaging with my son and my GN staff-mates. But during my solo time (which is about 20 hours at this point), I've been taking my horse Nacho Cheese and setting off into the mountains on hours-long hunting expeditions.

I dismount Nacho and pull out my bow, and then creep around, silently killing anything that moves. I've slowly learned Red Dead Online's three-star animal rating system, and taking down a three-star prize is a great thrill. But I go ahead and bag anything I can get. I've been saving up for a more powerful rifle, as my bow isn't strong enough to take down the bison and elk that hang out near my camp, and I have to blast them so many times with my repeater that I ruin their pelts.

I've hunted deer and coyotes, quail and skunks. My bags are so overpacked with meat that I have to run to the butcher once every 90 minutes or so to sell it all off. The money is flowing nicely, but that's not the point. For me, its the thrill of the hunt - something I've never enjoyed in a video game before now.

Strangely, I've found this aspect of Red Dead Online to be family appropriate. My wife doesn't seem to mind the kids watching me hunt and bloodily skin any number of animals - she seems to feel that it's more realistic than most games I play, and teaches the kids about where food comes from. And my 8- and 4-year-olds are having a great time keeping their eyes peeled for prey, and they get a sick kick out of shrieking "Eeeew!" when I skin a bear.

I'm utterly unconcerned with other players. I've only been bothered by them a few times, when a posse rolls up on me and kills me repeatedly. For a while, I was simply using the game's parlay system to get them to leave me alone, but I've since decided to change my stance to "Defensive" to prevent random attacks while hunting. It just sucks too much when I have a three-star buck on the back of Nacho Cheese and I'm moseying back to camp, and some dude shows up and kills me and Nacho. I don't mind being killed (nothing really bad happens, you just spawn a short distance away), but I hate losing my kills. I'm a recluse hunter - I just want to be left alone while I supply my small company with pelts and antlers.

Red Dead Online is providing me a lot of quiet fun during this holiday season. I'm actually finding it relaxing - which is something I never thought I would say about a Rockstar game. I've got the full game on Stadia (I'm playing the Online portion on PS4/PS5), and I think I may circle around and give the story mode another look. If the hunting is that strong in the story, I may pivot over that way, and eliminate other players from my experience altogether.

But for now, I'm content to stalk the frozen Rocky Mountains, blasting away at elk and shooting ravens out of the sky. Red Dead Online's accurate representation of wildlife is simply stunning, and I'm having a marvelous time living off the land in this wondrous wild world Rockstar has created. This is the best five bucks I've ever spent.

Chiaki, a free and open source PlayStation Remote Play client adds PlayStation 5 support

Own a shiny new PlayStation 5 and want to stream games from it to your desktop or laptop? Or perhaps you're clinging onto your PlayStation 4 and want to do the same? Chiaki is here to help.

Linux gaming? Not quite but it's another brilliant FOSS application that can enable you to do whatever you want, with what you already own. I've used Chiaki occasionally with my own PlayStation 4 to stream it to my Linux desktop and for the most part, it actually works surprisingly well depending on the network setup.

The big Chiaki 2.0.0 update went out and pulls in some big features on top of PlayStation 5 support being new, here's some of the big features:

  • PS5 Remote Play Support
  • Add Nintendo Switch Borealis GUI
  • FFMPEG in builds updated to 4.3.1
  • Add Video Profile Auto Downgrade when 1080p is selected for PS4
  • Add correct Bitrate for 1080p
  • Relicense under AGPL v3 only + OpenSSL
  • Connect all available controllers in GUI
  • Add Double Click for Fullscreen in GUI
  • Add Audio Device Selection to GUI
  • Add Congestion Control
  • Add Raspberry Pi Decoder
  • Add Text Input Support to Library
  • Improve GUI CLI for streaming
  • Add Sleep Mode Trigger
  • Add generic Hardware Decoder Selection to GUI

There's also a good few bug fixes included as well of course. Great to see Chiaki continue to evolve, another case of a few doing what a big company will not.

Chiaki itself has also moved. The developer is no longer using GitHub, and is instead now providing everything up on their own sourcehut - which you can now find here.

Sony to officially support the PS5 DualSense on Linux with a new driver

Roderick Colenbrander of Sony Interactive Entertainment has sent in a brand new and official Linux driver for the PS5 DualSense for even better out of the box support.

With the newly proposed driver, it enabled the DualSense to function in both Bluetooth and USD modes along with most other features working including LEDs, Touchpad, Motion Sensors and Rumble. However, they make it clear that the Adaptive Triggers and VCM-based Haptics are not yet supported but they hope to "have a dialog on how to expose these over time in a generic way".

Here's how the describe it will work:

DualSense supported is implemented in a new 'hid-playstation' driver, which will be used for peripherals by 'Sony Interactive Entertainment' (PlayStation). Hid-sony will be used for devices for the larger Sony Group. We intend to migrate existing devices over time gradually to hid-playstation. We do not want to cause any regressions and maintain quality. As such moving forward, unit tests are important and we started by providing these through 'hid-tools' including DualSense.

The Linux driver exposes DualSense functionality as a 'compositive device' similar to DualShock 4 in hid-sony, spanning multiple frameworks. First, it exposes 3 evdev nodes for respectively the 'gamepad', 'touchpad' and 'motion sensors'. The FF framework is used to provide basic rumble features. The leds-class is used to implement the Player indicator LEDs below the DualSense's touchpad, while the new 'leds-class-multicolor' is used for the lightbars next to the touchpad.

This will be really nice to make it into the Linux Kernel, as the more we have working out of the box the better. While Steam and SDL2 can already work with it, not everything goes through them of course and it would open up the DualSense to all sorts of other possibilities.

I'll eventually be grabbing myself a DualSense, so I'm keen to see how it feels.

Hat tip to MrPenguin.

Check out a replay of our session playing Override 2: Super Mech League with Games N Moorer

Override 2: Super Mech League is now available, so we took the game for a more extensive spin with Games N Moorer. This session was a ton of fun, as Override games provide quite a platform for smack talking and howls of victory. After some technical difficulties getting our game versions matched up, we were able to play eight or nine matches - even being raided by a viewer who proceeded to whoop us both - twice in a row.

Take a look:

Override 2 is now available on PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X|S. In addition to the multiplayer we were messing wtih, there is also a very cool "League" mode, which is kinda like a career mode in a sports game. I'm having a blast with Override 2 - look for a full review early next week.

Games N Moorer and Gaming Nexus swing back for more Heroes of Hammerwatch

Having had a blast a couple of weeks ago playing Blitworks' Heroes of Hammerwatch, Gaming Nexus and our streaming partner Games N Moorer decided to loop back around for another crack at the game.

Joined once again by my son Aidan (@AidanAllDay2000 on Twitter), Joseph and I dug further into Heroes of Hammerwatch. This time around, we managed to defeat the second boss. We also explored Hammerwatch's very fun arena mode, and took another (slightly more successful than last time) run at the terribly intimidating dungeon up north.

Heroes of Hammerwatch is a ton of fun with a group, and we are seriously considering making it a regular part of Games N Moorer's rotation. Keep an eye on GN for more new on that, and in the meantime, take a look at the replay:

Heroes of Hammerwatch: Ultimate Edition is now available on the PlayStation Store here, and on Steam here

While you're here, we'll go ahead and pop in some bonus content. Here's a second episode of Games N Moorer from yesterday. Watch Joseph freak out playing Super Smash Bros Ultimate - Sephiroth got added yesterday, which seems to be very exciting to...people who are into that.

Sony removes Cyberpunk 2077 from the store, issuing refunds

In a pretty shocking move, Sony has officially removed Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation store and will issue refunds to those that request it. Wow.

It's no secret that the game's plagued with problems on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Those on the PC and cloud services are faring better, but there's still plenty of bugs that make it hard to stay engaged in the game.

I can't remember a game that was deemed troubled enough to have it be removed from the PlayStation Store and have refunds available. Not even No Man's Sky in its release state necessitated a removal from the store.

Those that say The Witcher 3 also had launch issues can't point to that game ever being removed from Sony's store nor have refunds being offered. Yes, that game had problems which many have pointed out that weren't fixed for a year, but it never got to the point of what Cyberpunk 2077 has with its current state.

It's disappointing as under all the problems, there is a fun game with some great lore. And I feel for the developers at CD Projekt Red because there was a lot of crunch they went through to try and meet the last release date and I'm sure they're not going to have many fun times ahead with all that they have to fix.
