Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town sprouts on Switch July 14th

XSEED Games have announced that Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town is finally making its way stateside July 14th for $49.99. This game is a modern HD remake of the 2003 Game Boy Advance title Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town (which in turn was a remake of the Playstation 1 title Harvest Moon: Back to Nature). That all might sound confusing, but rights issues and franchise name changes aside, all you really need to know is one of the best farming sims ever is getting completely overhauled on Switch.

Friends of Mineral Town is widely considered the fan favorite in the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons series, and this remake adds a ton of new content. New playable characters, crops, marriage candidates, adoptable pets, events...it's taking an already massive sim and making it even bigger. I dumped an embarrassing number of hours into the GBA game back in high school and at the time I was astonished by how much content the game kept dishing up.

Watching this trailer, hearing the re-scored music, I can feel the old nostalgia pangs tugging at my wallet. You can pre-order the game now from the XSEED store, and they're even continuing the tradition of including an adorable plush cow as a pre-order bonus.

Triangles galore in Epic's demo of their next-gen Unreal Engine 5

Publisher & Developer Epic Games has announced their latest tech: Unreal Engine 5.  With this announcement also came a demo of this engine running on a PlayStation 5.  Unlike the eye-catching 'Samaritan' tech demo for Unreal Engine 4 back then, this almost looked like a full-fledged game.  Epic's Technical Director of Graphics Brian Karis and Special Projects Art Director Jerome Platteaux provided narration for this video and highlighted two specific aspects that makes this engine feel next-gen: lighting and geometry.

An impressive showing showcasing their 'Lumen' and 'Nanite' technologies as well as other audio/video qualities available in the Unreal Engine 4.25 build.  For more technical info on this tech or the UE5 & UE4 timeline, read below for more details on Epic's roadmap.

Fortnite's Airbus sets course for next-gen consoles

Epic Games announced Fortnite will arrive at launch on the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.  To be clear: this is not a new version of this popular battle-royale shooter.  Epic have just been developing the same game with an emphasis on utilizing the new development tools.  Here's a rundown of what to expect:

  • The Xbox Series & PS5 versions will initially run on Unreal Engine 4, but will migrate to the newly-announced Unreal Engine 5 in mid-2021.
  • Epic intends to support cross-progression on all items, stats, etc.
  • Epic still intends to support cross-play across ALL platforms
  • Development support for current gaming platforms is not going away

The free-to-play shooter is currently available on almost every platform: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, & PC (limited to Epic Games Store).  Given the immense popularity each successive season, Fortnite isn't going anywhere for a long time.  Keep your eyes open for more Fortnite news on Gaming Nexus.

More mooks will be sleeping with the fishes in the newly-announced Mafia Trilogy

Publisher 2K Games & Developer Hanger 13 have just announced what they've been cooking since releasing Mafia III and its later DLC expansions a few years ago.  Mafia Trilogy is set to release for Xbox One, PS4, and PC (Steam/Epic Game Store) in the future.  While a full reveal is scheduled to be shown on May 19th at 12pm EST, they released a short teaser trailer today.

Although store details have been pulled, all signs point to Mafia I: Definitive Edition receiving a full-on remake treatment while Mafia II: Definitive Edition with be a remaster with all DLC included.  While Gaming Nexus didn't review Mafia's third outing, Cyril Lachel was a big fan of the first and second entries.  Here's to seeing Hanger 13 respect the legacy of the first two, while also re-evaluating Mafia III's strengths and weaknesses.  More details to come, so stay tuned.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater returns later this year

2020 is looking to be a bright year for the skateboarding game genre. Skater XL and Sessions are out this year and the legend Tony Hawk will also be making his return. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 is coming on September 4th and it looks amazing. This looks a hell of a lot better than the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD remake that was released years ago.

This is yet another remake of the first two games however this is being rebuilt from the ground up and will include all of the levels, skaters and tricks. Create a Skater and Create a Park also return along with online play. The game will also include a vast majority of the original soundtracks but not every song will be there most likely due to licensing issues.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 will release on September 4th for PS4, Xbox One and the Epic Store as an exclusive.
